Daily Hardwood Care
Since hardwood floors have material characteristics different from other flooring material types, your planks need cleaning steps specific to genuine wood. For example, hardwood is a porous material so you want to avoid excess moisture when cleaning. The best tool for daily cleaning your hardwood flooring is a microfiber cloth or mop. A broom is also handy but can push debris across the floor rather than lifting it off the floor. Dust-mopping or sweeping your floor is an excellent daily strategy. Only use a Swiffer on your hardwood floors if your flooring manufacturer has warranted for this step.
Dirt & Debris
Everyday dirt and debris particles can quickly become abrasive offenders that create scratches on the wood surface when rubbed against it. The less time that little bits of dirt and debris spend on your floors, the better. In addition to sweeping and dust mopping, vacuuming offers more cleaning power and access for hard-to-reach areas. However, there are precautions to consider: Make sure no rotating brushes hit against the floor when using a vacuum and move your vacuum gently to prevent plastic wheels from scratching the wood surface.
Spills & Stains
If a spill does occur on your hardwood floors, avoid using harsh cleaners and do not use cleaners designed for other flooring materials like vinyl or tile. Use wood-specific cleaners and products such as liquid scratch concealer, wood floor polish, floor wax, and touch-up kits. Read all product instructions carefully before using them to ensure they sure are safe for the type of wood and finish you will clean. Since water and moisture can be problematic to wood, make sure to use as little as needed and use a microfiber cloth to dry the surface if needed.
